Benjamin West was an American-born painter of historical, religious, and mythological subjects. He was the first American artist to gain international acclaim, and his work was influential in the development of the neoclassical style in England. West was a prolific painter, producing hundreds of works throughout his career. His best-known works include The Death of General Wolfe, which depicted the death of the British General James Wolfe during the Battle of Quebec, and The Death of Nelson, which depicted the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
